Social Gossip in January 2019. This is where we share quick insights around the world of social media.
Facebook: has rolled out Group Stories globally. The feature allows Group members to contribute to a collaborative story.
Instagram: voice messaging rolled out globally on Instagram Direct. Instagram is has also brought some new features to its Stories format, including a new countdown sticker, and question stickers that can be used in Live videos and to share music recommendations. Instagram now lets you post to multiple accounts in one tap. The feature will save time for those who operate more than one account.
Twitter: introduced a toggle in the app to switch from the ranked timeline to the original, reverse-chronological feed. The move comes in recognition of the fact that Twitter is often most useful in real time, particularly during live events such as sports games or the Oscars.
Pinterest: is gearing up to go public. Pinterest allows users to “pin” images that correspond to their interests, something that has piqued the interest of ad agencies. When compared to other social media sites, it touts some impressive sales and marketing statistics. According to a Nielson study, 98% of “pinners” go out and try the ideas they find on the site, compared to the 71% average among other social media platforms.
Pinners are trying challenges rather than resolutions in 2019.
WeChat: stirred millions of discussions on Chinese social media. One of the most noteworthy features is “Time Capsule,” the platform’s answer to Instagram “Stories” which allows users to post instant videos of 15 seconds or less on user homepages for a 24-hour period. But will the feature become as successful as Instagram Stories has in the West?

TikTok: 2018 saw an app borne out of an online lip-syncing craze. TikTok still has a way to go before it can challenge the social media heavyweights. While TikTok may currently have fewer engaged users, it still offers valuable lessons about what might come next for social media. Is TikTok set to redefine social media? Globalwebindex carried out a special survey in November 2018 to find out.
